DONCASTER SHOWCASES ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY LEAD AS PM TELLS BRITISH BUSINESS “INNOVATION AND SKILLS ARE VITAL TO FUTURE PROSPERITY”

HRH The Duke of York KG, KCVOBritish bosses got a glimpse into the future at the recent Confederation of British Industry conference when a Doncaster-based project pioneering commercial use of 3D imaging showcased new generation TV screens capable of showing adverts, shows and films in lifelike 3D.

Leading Edge Technology Solutions (LETS), a support project to South Yorkshire businesses backed by Objective 1 and Doncaster College, demonstrated its 3D content capabilities and the new 3D TV technology in partnership with the Investment Team from Doncaster Council's Economic Development Unit.

As a result of LETS, Doncaster now boasts some of the UK’s best content production expertise in high definition digital 3D imaging. 3D TV requires no special glasses to view and has aroused attention in the commercial world as a new advertising and communications medium for shopping centres, hypermarkets, airports and rail stations, exhibition centres and entertainment complexes.

The importance of efforts to introduce new and emerging technologies to UK businesses was emphasised by Prime Minister Gordon Brown in a keynote speech to the conference during which he paid tribute to CBI thinking on skills, science and technology.

Calling for even closer co-operation between business and government, Mr Brown said there was need to search out new ways of attracting and retaining the best businesses in the world.

“This requires a long term approach to the advancement of science and innovation in the UK - building on our 10 year science framework which links the universities, research institutes and knowledge centres to business,” said Mr Brown who went on to stress the need to support initiatives to increase workforce skills levels.

“Our imperative - and our opportunity - is to compete in high value added services and manufacturing; and because that requires the best trained workforce in the world, our challenge is to unlock all the talents of all of the people of our country.”

Just what the people at LETS are doing – training each of their team in brand new 3D technologies for the future.
